Spirit levels have been the measuring instrument for aligning and adjusting walls, foundations, door and window lintels since ancient times.

The areas of application are wide-ranging, which is why it is also one of the hand tools that you will find on every building site and in every workshop. Both indoors and outdoors, you need the spirit level for aligning building elements at a certain angle or at a certain inclination.

For this purpose, the analogue spirit level has one or more enclosed water bubbles ("vials") within a mark that enable the exact alignment of the objects. Usually there is a vertical vial, one for horizontal alignment and often also a (rotatable) angular vial).

The most common models have 1-3 spirit levels, usually handles, often magnets on the side and are available in different lengths. There is everything from the pocket spirit level to the 1.80m long model.

Spirit Levels, Pocket Levels

The further development is the digital spirit level, which can indicate the desired angles even more precisely - i.e. in the range of millimetres.
To cut a long story short: you always need a spirit level! Aligning washing machines, hanging shelves, aligning cupboards, etc.

What length should your spirit level have?
Basically, the spirit level should be at least half the length of the object to be aligned. The longer the spirit level, the more accurate your measurement. In plain language: a small pocket spirit level will have a deviation of approx. 1mm at 1m. If you use a 30 cm spirit level for the same work, the possible deviation is only 0.5 millimetres per metre. The 30 cm model is therefore twice as accurate!
